With the Book
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
With the Book is a meditation on the quiet relationship between a human being and wisdom. The figure before us is neither a scholar displaying learning nor a teacher proclaiming doctrine. He is simply a man whose life has become inseparable from the book resting upon his knees.
The composition is marked by extraordinary stillness. His hands do not clutch the volume but rest upon it with the ease of lifelong familiarity, as though no clear boundary remains between the reader and what the book has gradually come to embody. His gaze is directed neither toward its pages nor toward the viewer. Instead, it reaches beyond the visible, suggesting a life shaped less by certainty than by continual reflection.
Although the drawing employs the artist's characteristic restrained grotesque, every distortion serves a deeply human purpose. The broad hat, elongated features, expressive eyes, and quiet posture transform the sitter into something more than an individual portrait. He becomes an image of every person who has discovered that wisdom is not accumulated but lived, patiently and humbly, over time.
Executed entirely in pencil, the work relies upon subtle tonal modelling and an economy of means. The absence of unnecessary detail allows the silence surrounding the figure to become an active presence. Nothing interrupts the intimate dialogue between the man and the Book.
The drawing ultimately speaks not of knowledge already possessed, but of an endless conversation with tradition, memory, and truth. It suggests that the deepest understanding is rarely found in definitive answers. Rather, it grows through a lifetime of faithful reading, attentive listening, and the willingness to remain a student until the very end.
