Mise-en-scène
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Mise-en-scène is one of the most quietly ironic works in the series. Rather than depicting a specific story, it presents a subtle drama of two people who share the same physical space while inhabiting different emotional realities.
The composition is built upon a delicate imbalance. The standing figure appears composed and self-assured, while the seated woman folds inward, preserving a space of inner dignity and emotional equilibrium. Their bodies seem close, yet the invisible distance between them becomes the true subject of the drawing. It is a conversation expressed entirely through posture, gesture, and silence.
Executed with remarkable economy, the drawing relies on only a few essential lines. Pencil strokes remain light and open, allowing the white paper itself to become part of the composition. Rather than describing every form, the artist suggests relationships, inviting the viewer to complete the emotional narrative through observation and reflection.
Despite its theatrical title, the work offers no accusation and no resolution. Instead, it is infused with quiet compassion. It reflects on the familiar human tendency for certainty, habit, or self-absorption to overshadow the living person standing beside us. Affection may still exist, yet genuine attentiveness has begun to fade.
The title provides the key to the work. Life itself often resembles a stage on which relationships are continually shaped by the position we choose to occupy. Sometimes the slightest shift in our place beside another person is enough to transform the entire scene. In this understated drawing, the artist reminds us that love is sustained not by conviction alone, but by the willingness to remain truly present to one another.
